Toxic Handlers in the Workplace

They are comforting. Their door is always open. And the stress being that way is taking it’s toll on their work and their health. They are what authors Sandra L. Robinson and Kira Schabram have labeled as “toxic handlers,” in today’s Harvard Business Review article entitled “When You’re the Person Your Colleagues Always Vent To”.

Chances are, you either are one of these burden-bearers, or you know the person who is. They’re like a beacon on a rocky shore, with an “always open” sign, and an unspoken promise to provide rational and sound advice and counseling.

Black Friday Alternatives

We’re closing early today, and we’re ready for a deep breath, and a true hiatus from the everyday hustle and bustle. Sure, some of us are preparing for a big Thanksgiving dinner, and navigating the multi-layered relationships of those who will gather with us, but we’re taking a break nonetheless. And let’s be honest… we needed it. With the toxicity of the election process, the hustle of day to day work, commuting, and all of the relationships that we’ve been negotiating this year, this first break of the holiday season couldn’t come soon enough.

Our Appreciation for Veterans in the Workplace

In honor of Veteran’s Day, we are sharing one of our favorite blog posts.

With 200,000 men and women in service returning to civilian life each year, employing a vet can spell success for a company’s bottom line.

“No Dream Is Too Big” Inside Susan DeCarlo’s Sabbatical to Mount Kilimanjaro

Next year, Susan DeCarlo, Vice President – Program Manager, Distinguished, is planning a trip with her 12-year-old daughter to Machu Picchu. The genesis of the idea: Her one-month-long sabbatical this past February which included climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, a safari, and a visit to the small island of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania. Susan is one of several of Distinguished’s employees so far who have participated in the company’s Passion Project, which enables employees with at least seven years at the company or at any of the companies Distinguished has acquired to take a 30-day sabbatical. Employees completely unplug from work during their month-long hiatus. That means no access to email (we shut it down), no checking in by phone, text or face time; employees are to completely disconnect. They may choose to go on a major trip, work for a nonprofit, write a screenplay, take a course, or even stay at home with the family. As long as you have all your bases covered at work, you’re good to go – literally.
